A sex offender is defined as an individual with a conviction for a crime involving sexual conduct such as rape, sexual assault, and prostitution. In Stephenson County, you can locate sex offenders by going to the Sheriff’s Alert page. Keep in mind that some sex offenders do not follow the registration law. As such, you may find that some records only list last known addresses.
Stephenson County Sheriff’s Alert:
Bail and Bondsman
If a person is charged with an illegal offense, he is allowed to remain free while awaiting trial if bail has been posted. Bail is the money “deposited” to the court as collateral to ensure the defendant’s return to court once the trial starts. This means that if fails to show up at the trial, he loses the money.
If a defendant cannot post bail because he lacks funds, a bondsman can be paid to bail him out. For 10% of the bond amount, the bondsman will sign a bond with the court in order to secure the defendant’s release. A bondsman’s fee cannot be refunded.
