Washington County Sheriff’s Alert:

Bail and Bondsman

A person arrested for an illegal offense may remain out of custody while awaiting trial as long as he was able to post bail. Bail is the amount of money required by the court as collateral to be paid by the defendant in order to secure his release. This will help ensure that the defendant will return to court once the trial begins. If he doesn’t appear at the trial, the bail is revoked and forfeited.

If the bail cannot be paid by the defendant, a bondsman can be hired to secure his release. The bondsman can act as a surety in exchange for 10% of the bail amount. Unlike bail, this fee cannot be refunded.
