DeWitt County Sheriff’s Alert:
Bail and Bondsman
A deposit of money or property is required by the court in order for a pretrial inmate to remain free from custody. This deposit is called bail. It will be held in the court’s keeping for the entire duration of the trial and only returned if the defendant appears at all of his court dates. Failure to do so means forfeiting the money.
A pretrial can opt to use a bondsman to secure his release from jail if he lacks the funds to post bail. The bondsman can act as a surety, providing the court with a bond in exchange for the defendant’s release. The cost of this service is usually 10% of the bail and is non-refundable.
