On January 10, 1816 the county was incorporated and named for Andrew Jackson a president of the United States. The county is located in the Carbondale-Marion, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area and located in the southern portion of Illinois. The area is known locally as Little Egypt.

The county jail is overseen by the sheriff’s office and is sworn to provide a safe and sanitary place of incarceration. It is the legal obligation of the Jackson County Jail Division officers to protect the community by holding persons who pose a threat to public safety. The jail’s goal is to return innates to society in better condition physically and emotionally than they were committed.
The jail is a medium custody and is used by multiple jurisdictions for offenders who have short state sentences. There are 139 bed in the jail and it houses both men and women.

Jail Visitation Hours are on Wednesday from 6 pm to 9 pm and Saturday from Noon to 3 pm.

  • Inmates are allowed 1 free onsite visit per week. Paid home visits are currently unlimited.
  • Three people are allowed to visit an inmate at one time. All 3 people must be registered including children.
  • Visits are for 30 minutes.
  • All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The adult must possess a copy of the child’s birth certificate.
  • Visitors need to show valid photo ID.
  • Behavioral problems will result in the visit being terminated.
  • Appropriate dress is required at all times.
  • No extended visits past the 30 minutes are allowed.

  • If a crime is being committed during the visit it will be reported to proper authorities.
