The Hennepin County jail, formally called the adult detention center, is a pre-trial facility in downtown Minneapolis. Inmates are housed in the public safety facility and in city hall, across the street from each other. The two locations are treated as one facility. The public safety facility and city hall are just north of the Hennepin County Government Center, on the light rail line.

Important Jail Policies and Procedures

All visitors’ names, including adults and children, must appear on the inmate’s visitor list.

Adult visitors must have a valid government issued photo identification. A yellow receipt with any other picture identification is acceptable.

Visitors under 18 must come with a parent or legal guardian.

All visitors must dress appropriately.

No contraband, including guns, knives, mace/pepper spray, nail files, tweezers, razors, scissors, box cutters, knitting needles, nail clippers, Swiss army card, large sets of keys on lanyards, and any items deemed dangerous.

All visitors must walk through a metal detector before entry.

Visiting passes won’t be issued during the last 15 minutes of the visiting time.

No cameras or cell phones are allowed in the visiting area.

Visits last 20 minutes, and can be shorter on busy days.

All visits take place in a visiting area.

No physical contact between visitors and inmates. Visiting booths separate the inmate and visitor with a glass divider, with telephones for communication.

Staff may end the visit before the end of the visiting time.

Violating any visiting rules could result in denial of future visits.
