On May 11, 1858, Minnesota joined the union as the 32nd state to do so. The northern boundary, which looks like a unique protrusion, was brought about by an agreement with Great Britain before the area was surveyed correctly which, in turn, made Minnesota the northernmost state of the 48 conterminous states of the United States of America. The state is surrounded to the west by North Dakota and South Dakota, to the north by the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba, to the south by Iowa, and to the east by Wisconsin and Lake Superior. Michigan is a top tourist draw that gathers as many as 40 million visitors annually because of its more than 400 stores located in Mall of America in Bloomington and its many lakes. St. Paul is the capital city of Minnesota.

The state of Minnesota has 87 counties, several of them termed as historical. The first nine counties were created on October 27, 1849, and 57 more were added when Minnesota became a state. In 1923, Lake of the Woods County was the last to be created.

The highest court of the state is the Supreme Court of Minnesota that is composed of seven justices elected to office for a six-year renewable term. The governor of Minnesota has the power to appoint a replacement should any vacancy occur before the general election. The mandatory age for a judge to retire is 70 years old.

It was in the year 1849 when the first court was assembled in Minnesota Territory. It was composed of a panel of three judges who were appointed by the American President that time, Zachary Taylor. In 1858, Minnesota became a state, which led to a rearrangement of the court as well. The former practice was for District Courts to send appeals directly to the Supreme Court of Minnesota. In 1983, an appellate court, the Court of Appeals, was created to handle these appeals.
