When it concerns land mass, Colorado, which in 1876 became the 38th state to join the union, is the eighth biggest state of the United States. The ancient Pueblo people were the first settlers to this western part of the country, where its Rocky Mountain region with its lush and different natural resources was hard to resist. The Plains Indians were the next settlers, and it was during the late 1500s when Europeans made its first exploration. The natural red-colored soil inspired the Spaniards to call it ‘Colorado’. The Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty that ended the 1846-48 Mexican-American War ceded Colorado to the United States. Settlers started to arrive in waves when gold was discovered in Colorado in 1858. The state is one of the places where fierce fighting between the white settlers and Native Americans occurred. Today, Colorado’s economy is still reliant on its tourism and agriculture brought about by its rich natural resources.

Colorado has the distinction of being the only state in the United States to reject an invitation from the Olympic Games to be its 1976 Winter Games host. The invitation was denied because the state’s voters did not like using the tax revenues of their state to provide finances for the games.

There are 64 counties in Colorado which are vital government units because the state does not have townships. The county and consolidated city governments are found in two counties of the state, which are the City and County of Broomfield and the City and County of Denver.

The Supreme Court of Colorado is the highest judicial seat of the state, consisting of six associate justices and a chief justice. It is only in Denver that there is an integration of both the municipal and county courts which are not part of the administrative purposes of the state court.
