Important Jail Policies and Procedures:

Inmates at the Brown County Jail are given a set visitation schedule according to their assigned cells. They are also held responsible for notifying family and friends of the visitation times. Only 3 visitors at a time are allowed for each inmate. Visitors under the age of 18 must have an adult or legal guardian accompanying him or her.

Visitors are required to arrive 10 minutes prior to their scheduled time. They will be asked to undergo a body search, show a photo ID, and sign in the visitation book with their name, address, and any other information deemed appropriate. Any purses, bags, or anything that is capable of hiding contraband is not allowed in the visitation area.

Inmates assigned in the Medical and Ag Seg is allowed visitors on Wednesdays. Inmates in the North Block can have visitors on Saturdays while inmates in the South Block can have visitors on Sundays.  

Inmates at the Brown County Jail are allowed correspondence. Please note that all mail is open and searched for contraband by the facility’s staff before it is given to the inmate. Any correspondence should be sent via the US Postal Service. Blank paper and envelopes will not be accepted, nor will mail that have been sprayed with perfume. Inmates are allowed to receive no more than 5 photos at a time. Any photos that are determined to be inappropriate will be kept with the rest of the inmate’s property.

While inmates are not allowed to hold money while they are incarcerated, they will be given a commissary account. They can use money in that account to purchase items from the Brown County Jail’s commissary menu.

The starting salary of a deputy sheriff in Brown County is $16.85 per hour.

In the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy sheriff assigned to road patrol must be at least 21 years old, have a valid operator’s license, possess a high school diploma or GED, have an Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy certification, and must have not been previously convicted of perjury, domestic violence, or a felony. He or she must also be physically capable of using lethal and non-lethal tools as well as taking suspects into custody.

A deputy sheriff assigned to road patrol has several duties. He or she will be tasked to patrol the streets in order to prevent criminal activity and promote public order. He or she will also be tasked to investigate crimes, serve warrants, conduct traffic enforcement, and provide emergency assistance as required.

Bail and Bondsman

Individuals who have been charged with a crime in Brown County will be allowed to post bail as soon as the judge sets the trial date as well as the amount of the bond. For his service, the bondsman will require a non-refundable fee which should not be more than 10% of the bail amount.
