Bail and Bondsman
Bail is the money lodged with the court as collateral in exchange for a pretrial inmate’s release from custody. The court will keep the money until the end of the trial to ensure that the defendant shows up at all of his court dates. After the trial, bail is refunded to the defendant minus any court fees. But if the defendant misses a court date, he forfeits the bail.
A pretrial inmate can get help from a bail bondsman if he cannot post bail on his own. A bail bondsman can act as a surety in exchange for a non-refundable fee. The fee is usually 10% of the bail amount.
