A sex offender is a person who has been convicted of an offense involving sexual conduct such as rape, incest, and child molestation. The law requires a sex offender must register his information with the sheriff on a periodic basis. Their records are then entered in the state sex offender database and the national sex offender database. Residents of Ottawa County can locate sex offenders in their neighborhood by checking the Sheriff’s Alert page. Take note that you need to read the disclaimer before accessing the database. Also, some offenders fail to register so you may view some records that only contain last known addresses.

    Bail and Bondsman

The court requires a defendant awaiting trial to pay bail (money or valued property) before it will allow him to be released from custody. The payment will be used to guarantee the defendant’s appearance in court when the trial begins. After the trial, the payment is returned minus any court fees. However, failure to appear means that the court gets to keep the money.

A bail bondsman can act as a surety on behalf of a defendant who cannot afford bail. This service usually costs 10% of the bail amount. However, unlike bail, this fee cannot be refunded.
