Bail and Bondsman
In Wayne County, bail is set by the court to allow a defendant to be released in the meantime while he waits for his trial to start. Part of the condition for the release is the collateral required by the court to ensure that the defendant appears at his trial. If he doesn’t, the collateral (money) will be forfeited. If the defendant cannot pay the bail, a bondsman can act in his stead. For a fee, the bondsman will be the one who is held responsible by the court for paying the bail amount if the defendant misses his trial. The fee is usually equal to 10% of the bail amount.
