While the history of the county can be traced as far back as 1820, it was only in 1831 that it became wholly independent from other neighboring counties with regard to its administrative and judicial purposes. The original Allen County Jail was constructed in 1833. It is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places due to two noteworthy events – the notorious murder of Sheriff Jess L. The current county jail is located in the Allen County Justic Center, constructed in 1990, which also houses the Sheriff’s Office and the Common Pleas Courts.

Important Jail Policies and Procedures:

Inmates are allowed visitors twice a week with a maximum of 5 people (including children). Individuals who are below 18 years of age are required to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Visitors are only allowed 20 minutes per visit and needs to be signed in 15 minutes before their scheduled visit. Clothing restrictions for visitors include tops that are see through, low cut, or tube tops. Also, visitors are not allowed to wear clothing that reveals the midsection.
