County History:   

Established in 1849 the area is known for its history, textile manufacturing and agriculture.  Once inhabited by the Sissipahaw and Occaneechi Native American tribes, the county was also rich in dairy production on farms that have now been developed into prime real estate.  During World War II, planes were built to train bomber pilots and during the Cold War, guidance systems and radar equipment were produced by Western Electric.  The USS Alamance was produced and served in World War II as an attack cargo ship.
