The county was established in 1771 and its county seat is in Greensboro.  It is third on the list of counties with the most citizens and since 1938, a second seat is in High Point, NC.  The state’s first and only public institution of higher learning for women was established in 1932 in Greensboro.  It later became part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  The area has a history of racial unrest.
