Bail and Bondsman

Bail is the pledge of money to the court in exchange for the temporary release of a pretrial inmate from custody. It serves as collateral to secure the defendant’s compliance with fulfilling all of his court obligations. If he keeps his word, the court refunds the bail minus court fees at the end of the trial. If he violates the conditions of his release, he will forfeit the bail.

If a defendant cannot afford bail, he can pay 10% of the bail amount to a bail bondsman instead. A bondsman can act as a surety and will be held responsible for paying the entire bail amount should the defendant fail to appear in court. Take note that the bond fee is non-refundable.
