  1. All visitors must complete and submit a visitor application. A separate application must be completed for each proposed visitor (minor or adult). It is recommended that applicants have all the required documentation ready and available prior to filling out the online application to ensure successful completion and submission. The Department only accepts Electronic Visit Applications for prison.
  2. Visitors who are 18 years of age and older must present a valid, current photo identification at the time of the visit (e.g., driver’s license or state ID card, passport, military or government identification, tribal identification, alien registration). Additionally, each facility has its own visiting guidelines detailing important notices, visiting rules, family-friendly events, and visit schedules, which can be accessed in the table below. See the Prison Alerts & Notices for information that may impact your travel plans.
  3. The visitor application approval process must be completed before an individual is placed on an inmate’s Approved Visitor List.
  4. When an inmate is transferred to another prison facility, his/her Approved Visitor List will remain and be available in the Statewide Visit System. Inmates are responsible for notifying their visitors to transfers.
  5. Individuals denied placement on an inmate’s Approved Visitor List would be informed, in writing, of the reason for denial.
  6. Inmates may remove a visitor from their Approved Visitor List, or request to resume visits with the removed visitor. Visitors must submit a new application if they have been removed.
  7. Minors are those individuals who are under 18 years of age. The following are required for all minors who will be visiting an inmate at a Department of Corrections (DOC) prison facility: Minors must be on the inmate’s Approved Visitor List; and Minors must be accompanied during the entire visit by their non-incarcerated parent/legal guardian, or a designated escort.
  8. Per DOC Policy 590.100, the Extended Family Visit (EFV) Program is for visits in prison facilities between eligible inmates and his/her immediate family member(s) in a private housing unit. EFVs are intended to support building sustainable relationships important to inmate reentry, as well as provide an incentive for those serving long-term sentences to engage in positive behavioral choices, therefore reducing violent infractions. The requirements for EFV visitors must meet include: The visitors must be immediate family members who can provide legal verification of the relationship, and Incarcerated Individuals will complete the incarcerated individual portion of the EFV application and send the paperwork to family members who are applying for EFV privileges.
  9. Incarcerated individuals may request arrangements for special situations, such as friends or family traveling from extended distances.
  10. If a visitor leaves during any visit period, he or she may be allowed to return during the next authorized visit period.
  11. Visitors are welcome to arrive 30 minutes before visits and will check-in at the visitor entrance.
  12. Visitors will park in the visitor parking lot on the right at the entrance to facility grounds (first 6 rows). The main facility is the 2-story building behind the flagpoles and C-2 visitation at MSU is located at the west end of the parking lot. Please use the concrete sidewalks and do not cut through vehicles in the parking lot when going to the MSU Visiting room.
  13. Visitors who are 18 years of age and older must present identification (ID) that is valid with a current photo (e.g., driver’s license or state ID card, passport, military or government ID, tribal ID, alien registration). The Superintendent/designee may authorize other forms of ID. Expired or non-photo ID will not be accepted unless the Superintendent/designee approves in exceptional situations (e.g., the ID is recently expired and the visitor is known to visit by employees).
During visitation, money or vending machine debit cards may be used for vending machine purchases by visitors. Cards may be used for vending machine purchases by visitors only. Once opened, purchased food items must be removed from their packaging and placed on plates or napkins. Visitors and incarcerated individuals may not share items from the same plate, napkin, or container. Any unopened items may be taken home by the visitor.
  14. Visitors will take all unspent money and vending machine debit cards with them when they leave.
  15. Dress standards are necessary to ensure the safety and security of all individuals and promote a positive environment. Visitors should wear clothing that is conservative in nature to maintain a respectful visiting environment and ensure processing time is kept to a minimum.
  16. The Visiting Sergeant/Shift Commander/designee will make the final determination regarding the appropriateness of any clothing, footwear, or accessory.
  17. All visitors, including children, must dress appropriately for visitation. All clothing must cover from the neck to the kneecaps. The following types of clothing are not allowed to be worn: tube tops, tank tops, or halter tops, see-through clothing, mini-skirts, mini-dresses, shorts, skorts, or culottes (at or above the kneecap), form-fitting clothes such as leotards, spandex, and leggings clothes that expose a person’s midriff, side, or back, tops or dresses that have revealing necklines and/or excessive splits, coats, jackets, shawls, and scarves will be placed in an appropriate area.
  18. Prohibited Items not allowed inside the secured perimeter of a unit: Any food items, purses, diaper bags, briefcases, cameras, baby strollers, toys, dolls, photographs or photograph albums, paper money, knives, drugs, medication (exceptions are granted regarding prescribed medications on a case-by-case basis), tobacco, lighters, matches, cell phones, pagers, laptop computers, cameras, digital recorders or any other type of electronic/wireless devices, or any other non-authorized items.
  19. To ensure all individuals’ safety in case of an emergency arises, clothing that resembles state-issued clothing (e.g., red shirts, khaki pants, gray sweatpants, and sweatshirts) is not allowed.
  20. A brief hug and kiss (i.e., no more than 4-5 seconds in length) are permitted at the beginning and conclusion of visits. During the visit, the only physical contact allowed between incarcerated individuals and adult visitors is holding hands with hands in plain view. While seated at a table, hands must be on or above the tabletop. As visiting areas are family-friendly environments, caressing and/or sexually suggestive behavior of any kind is not allowed.
  21. Visitors that cause significant concern during their visit may be suspended from visiting privileges
  22. Visits may become emotional at times. If visit personnel observe this, they may check in with the visitor(s)/individual to ensure everything is okay.
  23. Conversations should remain quiet, without harsh language or swearing, encouraging pleasant and caring family interaction. Visitors and incarcerated individuals will avoid loud, excessively emotional, or disruptive behavior.
  24. Visit areas are provided for all visitors. Visitors and incarcerated individuals will use furnishings for their intended use.
  25. Children must always be under the direct supervision and within sight of the visiting parent or guardian/escort. Children should always remain at the table or in authorized play or break areas. The incarcerated individual may supervise a child(ren) while the adult visitor uses the restroom or the vending machine, provided there is no restriction prohibiting the individual from being alone with the child(ren).
  26. For health and safety purposes, children under 5 years of age must have an adult escort them when they use the restroom. While an adult visitor escorts the child to the restroom, the incarcerated individual may supervise the remaining children, provided there is no restriction prohibiting the individual from being alone with the child(ren).
  27. Showing affection, holding, and playing with visiting children promote positive family interaction. Visitors should be considerate of other visitors and public surroundings.
  28. Grooming of children’s hair may be done during visits, unless visits occur in a dining hall.
  29. When changing children’s soiled garments, please use the provided changing areas.
  30. Adult escorts are expected to encourage children to return play items to their proper locations after use.
