With its county seat in Rocky Mount, this county lies at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  The county was established in 1785 and is named for Benjamin Franklin.  During the 20th century prohibition, this county was considered the “moonshine capital of the world.”  Shine is still made in the area, but since the 1980s, residential development has increased particularly around Smith Mountain Lake.  Commuters to nearby Roanoke, Lynchburg, Danville and Martinsville and retirees have both increased the population.
