As of the 2010 census, its population was 22,134 and the county seat is Raymondville, which is also the largest city. The county was created in 1912 and is 794 square miles in total area. A Texan and a democrat, John G. Willacy is the county’s namesake. Home of the Bermuda Onion, for many years, Raymondville held an annual Onion Festival, using the tag line, “The Breath of a Nation.” In 1940, the first oil wells were identified in the county’s Willamar Oil Field; today oil production continues to be a major part of the local economy, although increasingly overshadowed by natural gas.
