Travis County Information
Established in 1840 and the fifth most populous county in the state, as of the 2010 census, the population was 1,024,266. The capital, county seat and largest city is Austin. The county was named for the commander of the Republic of Texas forces at the Battle of the Alamo, William Barret Travis. The total area of the county is 1,023 square miles.

This complex encompasses one full block of downtown Austin between 10th & 11th streets and Guadalupe and Nueces streets. The first and oldest building is the Heaman/Sweat Historic County Courthouse. This building is used for hearing civil cases and contains the County Clerk’s Office & Law Library. The main entrance to this building faces Guadalupe St.

In 1986, the Travis County Jail (TCJ) was opened to house 286 pretrial detainees. The main entrance to TCJ faces the plaza directly behind Heaman/Sweat Court House.

The Travis County Correctional Complex was first opened in 1977 and is a campus-style correctional facility, encompassing approximately 130 acres. The majority are Direct Supervision which allows staff to actively manage inmate behaviour to produce a safe and secure environment.

In order to qualify for face-to-face visits, inmates must meet the following qualifications:
Be in a classified minimum, medium or maximum housing
Any inmate in disciplinary or other lockdown housing level status, or with a current protective order with the visitor will not be eligible for Face-to-Face visits.
Visitors registering for a face to face visit must do so online and 24 hours in advance. Visitors need to check in 30 minutes prior to their visit to allow time for the inmate to be brought down to visitation. Any visitors that show up late may have their visit cancelled and will need to re-register for the next available time slot.
