Palo-Pinto County was named for the Palo Pinto Creek and was established in 1857. As of the 2010 census, its population was 28,111 and the county seat is Palo Pinto. The largest city in the county is Mineral Wells.

In 1992 licensed wildlife rehabilitator Amanda Lollar purchased an old building in Mineral Wells that had become a residence for thousands of wild bats. Lollar operated the building as the Bat World Sanctuary.
