Houston County has a total area of 1,237 square miles and was established in 1837. As of the 2010 census, the population was 23,732 and the county seat and largest community is Crockett. The county gets its name from a former Texas Governor, Sam Houston. The county was one of few that still prohibited the sale of alcohol until they voted in 2007 to change the ruling.
