The county was settled in 1846 and the population estimated at 2,368,139 as of the 2010 census. The county seat is Dallas and it is also the largest community. The total area of the county is 909 square miles. It is possibly named for George Mifflin Dallas, the 11th Vice President of the United States under U.S. President James K. Polk.
