A sex offender is mandated by federal law to register his information in the state sex offender database and the national sex offender database. A person is considered a sex offender if he has been convicted of a sex crime such as rape, prostitution, and incest. Anyone can access information on sex offenders living or working in Minnehaha County by searching the South Dakota Sex Offender Registry. Because some offenders fail to register, you may encounter records that only show last known addresses.
Bail and Bondsman
An accused individual can get temporarily released from jail while awaiting trial through bail. Bail is the money that “deposited” to the court as collateral to ensure the defendant will return to court once the trial starts. If he violates any of the conditions of his release, he forfeits the money.
A defendant who cannot afford bail can use the services of a bail bondsman. A bail bondsman will act as a surety on behalf of a defendant in exchange for 10% of the bail amount. This fee cannot be refunded.
