Bail and Bondsman
An individual charged with a crime may remain free while awaiting trial if he was able to post bail. Bail is the money or property placed in the court’s keeping as collateral to ensure his compliance with all of the court’s dictates. If he violates any of the conditions of his release, he forfeits the money.
If the defendant is financially incapable of posting bail, he can hire a bondsman to do so on his behalf. The bondsman can act as a surety in exchange for 10% of the bail. However, this fee is non-refundable no matter what the outcome of the case is.
