Anyone who wishes to locate sex offenders in Steuben County can visit the Sheriff’s Alert page. Bail and Bail Bond Agents:
A defendant who wishes to get out of jail while the trial is still pending must post bail. Bail is the amount of money required by the court to secure the defendant’s fulfillment of all of his court obligations. After the trial, a refund will be given to the defendant minus a 3% administrative fee. If the defendant has missed any of his scheduled court appearances. then the bail will be forfeited and a warrant will be issued for his arrest. The defendant must remain in custody until he is released or the case is dismissed if bail remains unpaid.
The New York courts require payment in the exact amount. Change will not be given. However, individuals can use more than one mode of payment when posting for bail. The acceptable forms of money are as follows:
A bond agent is able to post bail on behalf of a defendant for a non-refundable fee. Because the New York State Insurance Department monitors bond agents, they have placed the fees in a tiered system. To calculate the bond fee, you can follow the system below:
For a bond of $200 or less, the fee is $10.
For a bond of $3000 or less, the fee is 10% of the bail
For a bond of $3001-$10000, the fee is 10% of the first $3000 and 8% on the remaining amount.
For a bond that is higher than $10000, the fee is 10% of the first $3000, 8% of the amount between $3000 and $10000, and 6% on the remaining amount.
To compute for the bond fee of a $15000 bond, you can use this formula: (10% x $3000) + (8% x $7000) + (6% x $5000). The fee is $1160.
