Bail and Bondsman
Bail is the money lodged with the court in exchange for the temporary release of a defendant from custody while the trial is still pending. The money will be used to ensure the defendant will appear in court once the trial starts. The defendant will get his money back after the trial with the court fees and fines deducted as long as he complies with all of his court obligations. Violating any of the conditions of his release will mean forfeiting the money.
A defendant who does not have enough funds for bail can use a bondsman’s services in order to get released temporarily from jail. The bondsman acts as a surety for a non-refundable fee that is equal to 10% of the bail amount.
