Important Jail Policies and Procedures:

Inmates at the Berrien County Jail are encouraged to keep in contact with family and friends through visitation. Sunday is the first day of the week for visitation. Each inmate is allowed one 20-minute non-contact visit per week.  A maximum of two people may visit at the same time. Visitors 13-17 yrs old must have proper I.D. and be accompanied by an adult. Visitors 18 and over must have a State ID, Military ID, or Driver’s License. No one under the age of 13 will be allowed to visit.

Bail and Bondsman

Bail is the money lodged with the court to secure the temporary release of a pretrial inmate. It is used by the court to help guarantee the defendant’s return once the trial starts. Failure to appear will result in the bail getting forfeited.

If a defendant cannot post bail due to financial difficulties, he or she can hire a bondsman to help him. A bondsman can act as a surety, becoming liable to the court for paying the defendant’s bond if he misses a court appearance. In exchange for this service, the bondsman charges 10% of the bail amount as his fee. It cannot be refunded.
