Bail and Bondsman
The court requires payment known as bail before it will grant temporary freedom to a pretrial inmate. This money will be used to ensure the inmate’s appearance in court once the trial starts. If the inmate does not appear as promised, the court gets to keep the money and the inmate becomes a fugitive.
If the amount of the bail is too high for the inmate to pay, he can use 10% of the amount to pay a bondsman instead. A bondsman is in the business of signing bonds for defendants who cannot post bail on their own. The fee paid to a bondsman cannot be refunded.
