Bail and Bondsman
A person charged with a crime may be released from jail while awaiting trial if bail has been paid. This is the amount of money set by the court to be used to ensure the defendant’s appearance in court when required. Failure to show up will result in the bail getting revoked and forfeited.
If the bail is set too high for the defendant to pay, he can still get released from jail with the help of a bondsman. A bondsman is in the business of acting as a surety on behalf of defendants for a fee. The fee is usually 10% of the bail amount and cannot be refunded.
