Wabash County is located in the south eastern part of Illinois known as Little Egypt. At the 2010 census, the population of Wabash County was 11,947, The county seat is Mount Carmel. The county was formed in 1824 out of Edwards County to stop an armed confrontation between the militias of Albion and Mr. Carmel. The county is named for the Wabash River which forms the eastern and southern borders.

The county has an area of 228 square miles of which 4.3 square miles is water. It is the fifth smallest county in Illinois by area.

Important Jail Policies and Procedures

No more than four adults 18 years and older are allowed to visit an inmate. All detainee visits are limited to two fifteen minutes visits per week. Visits must be arranged by calling the jail to make an appointment. For Thursday visits from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. appointments must be made by called between 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Sunday visits from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Must be scheduled by calling between 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

All visitors must have a valid government issued id and dress in proper attire wile visiting the jail. The jail reserve the right to refuse any visitor at any time.

Mail can be sent to an inmate, but the correctional officer on duty has the right to inspect mail and log it in. When sending mail to an inmate it must have a full return name and address.
