Shasta County Information

The population of the county based on the census in 2010 is 177,223 and the county seat is Redding. The county comprises the Redding, California Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county covers the northern part of Sacramento Valley was founded in 1850.   The county was named after Mount Shasta, the name is derived from the English equivalent for the Shasta people, the name of an Indian tribe that once lived in the area. The name of the tribe was spelled in various ways until the present version was used when the county was established. Originally Mt. Shasta was within the county, but it is now part of Siskiyou County to the north.  The total area of the county is 3,847 square miles and there are departments in the county office that look after the citizens. These are probation, emergency management, auditor, attorney, and Sheriff’s office.

Visitation Hours:

To visit an inmate at the main jail facility you must first be in touch with the reception officer who will give you the inmate’s visitation schedule. Each inmate at the facility can have up to two scheduled visits; inmate workers are allowed three visits. The visiting schedule is posted in the jail lobby located at 1655 West Street in Redding. The visiting hours are generally 8:30 am to 11:30 am and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, 7 days per week; an additional period of 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm is available on weekends.
