With its county seat in Kittanning, Armstrong county was established in 1800 and named for Major General John Armstrong who served in the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War.  The county is also home to the smallest city in American, Parker with a population less than 800.  It was an oil boom town during 1873 and at that time, the population was estimated to be about 20,000.
