Service and Responsibilities:
The Court of Common Pleas is a trial court of general jurisdiction resolving controversies involving a wide variety of cases. The Courts of Common Pleas are responsible for all cases involving children and family matters, all major civil court cases such as personal injury, professional liability, and contract and property disputes, all criminal cases involving misdemeanors and felonies, appeals from the minor courts, and appeals not exclusively assigned to another court.

The Lawrence County Court Administration Office’s primary responsibility is assisting the president judge in all necessary duties to effectively administer the judicial system and guide cases through our several courts. The Office of the Prothonotary/Clerk of Courts and Orphans’ Court is a legal custodian of records that handles Criminal, Civil and Juvenile actions, safe-keeping records filed, docketed, and indexed with the Lawrence County Court of Common Pleas. Services and Responsibilities:
The Recorder of Deeds Office is responsible for recording, protecting, preserving, and reproducing legal documents related to real estate in Lawrence County. The responsibilities include the recording of deeds, mortgages, and various miscellaneous items, such as the right of ways, easements, power of attorney, leases, UCC’s (secured transactions), notary bonds, drafts of the survey and subdivision plans, mortgage releases, satisfactions, postponements and assignments. Besides, the Register of Wills office probates the wills of all decedents and issues letters of administration and testamentary in each estate and works as an agent for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to acquire inheritance tax and various fees relating to each estate.
