Dakota County, Nebraska Sheriff Overview

Dakota County is a county found in the northeasternmost part of Nebraska. Its county seat is in Dakota City. Dakota County is part of the Sioux City, IA–NE–SD Metropolitan Statistical Area. In the Nebraska license plate system, Dakota County is represented by the prefix 70 (it had the 70th-largest number of vehicles registered in the county when the license plate system was established in 1922). In August 2009, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners reversed a decision to abandon this system for alphanumeric plates upon introduction of new license plates in 2011. Douglas, Lancaster, and Sarpy Counties remain the only counties with alphanumeric plates in the state. Dakota County is named after the historic Dakota Sioux tribe, who were powerful in the area of Nebraska and South Dakota. Inmate Search in Dakota County Jail

The Dakota County Jail does not maintain an online list of incarcerated inmates. The State of Nebraska, however, offers statewide inmate search, with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, with filters like First and Last Names, as well as their DCS ID Number. Each inmate file contains their DCS ID Number, Demographics (Inmate Name, Gender, Race, Date of Birth, Facility), Sentence Information (Total Sentence, Sentence Begin Date, Good Time Law, Projected Release Date, Parole Eligibility Date, Parole Discharge Date, Parole Hearing Date, Parole Discharge Type, Next Parole Board Review Date, Release Date, Reason for Release), Offense Information (Description, Run Code, Minimum and Maximum Offense Term, County of Commitment). To inquire, it’s best to personally visit the Jail at 1601 Broadway, Dakota City, NE or call them at 402-987-2170.

Important Jail Policies and Procedures

One should be sure that they are part of the visiting list of an inmate before they can visit them. In certain circumstances such as when an inmate first enters prison or is transferred to a new prison, a visiting list might not exist yet. In this case, immediate family members who can be verified by the information contained in the inmate’s Pre-Sentence Report, may be allowed to visit. However, if there is little or no information available about a person, visiting may be denied. You should always call the prison ahead of time to ensure your visit will be permitted.

Wear clothing that is appropriate for a large gathering of men, women, and young children. Wearing inappropriate clothing (such as provocative or revealing clothes) may result in your being denied visitation.

Because many people are usually visiting, it is important visits are quiet, orderly, and dignified. The visiting room officer can require you to leave if either you or the inmate is not acting appropriately.

Sex Offender Search and Lookup

All registered sex offenders are registered on either a national or state sex offender database. The people on these databases have been convicted of a sex or kidnapping crime. The definition of a sex offender is a person convicted of a crime involving sex, including rape, molestation, and production or distribution of child pornography.

Bail and Bail Bondsman

There is no commercial bail in Nebraska

Upon your arrest in Nebraska, bail is set by a judge. You must post bail yourself without use of a bail bondsman if you want a temporary release. Nebraska does not allow commercial bail bonds. Bondsman from other states are unable to assist you in Nebraska. Nebraska has their own state run bail bond program. This means that if you want to post bail instead of staying in jail until your trial you must do so yourself or tell a family member or friend to come directly to the jail. In the State of Nebraska you will pay cash for the full amount of the bail at the jail in person. You will then be released from the County Jail. Another option may be contacting a criminal defense attorney, which you should probably do anyway depending on your situation. Always seek counsel if unsure of what to do upon your arrest. If you cannot afford counsel, it will be appointed for you.
