Bail is the money lodged with the court for the release of a pretrial inmate. The court will hold the money until the end of the trial, returning it to the defendant minus any fees as long as he was able to fulfill all of his court obligations. However, if he fails to do this such as missing a court date, he then forfeits the money.
A bail bondsman is a person who can post bail on behalf of a defendant in exchange for a fee. This fee is non-refundable and typically equal to 10% of the bail.
