Sex Offender Search and Lookup:

Based on federal law, all sex offenders must provide their information for registration in the state and national sex offender databases. These systems are used to monitor and track sex offenders for public safety purposes. A sex offender is a person who has been convicted of an offense involving criminal sexual conduct such as sexual conduct with a minor, sexual assault, and sexual exploitation of a minor. In Kentucky, residents can locate sex offenders residing near their neighborhood by visiting this website.

Keep in mind that there is no guarantee that all the information in the registry is accurate and complete. Some sex offenders may fail to update their registration resulting in some of the information to be out-of-date such as last known addresses.

Bail and Bondsman

Once a person is charged with a crime in Monroe County, he may be able to stay out of jail while he waits for the trial to begin if the court grants him bail. To secure his release, an individual posts bail by signing a statement that they will return on their appointed court date. For certain crimes, the bond set by the court will also require the defendant to pledge money or property to the court. If the court date is missed, the money or property is lost.

If an individual does not have the money to post bail, he can use the services of a bondsman to secure his release. For a non-refundable fee, the bondsman will sign the bond, assuming the burden of payment if the defendant misses a court date. The bondsman typically charges 10% of the bail amount.

It is illegal to practice commercial bail bonding in Kentucky. Ky. Stat. § 431.510 (outlawing commercial bail bond industry); see Stephens v. Bonding Assoc. of Kentucky, 538 S.W.2d 580 (Ky 1976) (upholding statute). If a bondsman from another state is planning to apprehend a fugitive who has run away to Kentucky, he is required by law to secure a warrant first. Ky. Rev. Stat. § 440.270.
