Bail and Bondsman

To stay out of jail while the trial is still pending, a defendant must pledge money to the court. This is called bail. The money is used to guarantee the defendant’s appearance in court once the trial starts. Failure to appear will mean forfeiting the money.

A bondsman offers his services to defendants who cannot afford bail on their own. For 12% of the bail amount, the bondsman will secure the release of a defendant by signing a bond with the court. If the defendant skips bail, it will be the bondsman’s responsibility to pay the bond amount.
