Bail and Bondsman

The money you put down as a form of collateral with the court in exchange for the temporary release of a pretrial inmate is called bail. If the defendant violates the conditions of his release, the money you put down will be forfeited.

A defendant who cannot pay the bail due to financial problems can still get released from jail with the help of a bondsman. The bondsman can sign a bond with the court to guarantee the defendant’s appearance at his trial after getting released. If he doesn’t show up, the bondsman will be obligated to pay the entire amount stated in the bond. To hire a bondsman, you must pay him 12% of the bail amount. This is non-refundable.
