Johnson county was established in 1854 and has a total area of 734 square miles. As of the 2010 census, the population was 150,934. Cleburne is both the county seat and the largest community. A Texas Ranger, politician and soldier by the name of Middleton Johnson is the county’s namesake.

Henry Briden, the first settler in the county, constructed his log cabin on the Nolan River and it is still standing today and can be viewed from Highway 174 in Rio Vista.
