Sex Offender Search and Lookup:
A person is considered a sex offender if he has been convicted of a sex crime such as rape, incest with a minor, and prostitution. The law requires sex offenders to register their information with local law enforcement for records purposes. Their information must be entered into the state sex offender registry. In Oregon, the Oregon State Police Sex Offender Unit maintains the database of all sex offenders in the state. However, the law only allows those designated as a Level 3 offender, predatory sex offender, or a sexually violent dangerous offender will be listed on the public website, the Oregon Sex Offender Inquiry System. If you wish to locate all the registered sex offenders in your neighborhood, you will have to call 503-378-3725 Extension 4429.
Bail and Bondsman
An accused individual in custody within the state of Oregon is allowed to post 10% of the bail amount in exchange for his temporary release. This 10% payment is called security and is used to secure the defendant’s appearance in court when the trial starts.
If a judge believes that a defendant should not be released on personal recognizance or conditional release, he will set a bail amount that must be paid. The amount will vary depending on the gravity of the crime, the defendant’s criminal history, and his ties to the community. For example, a $10,000 bail may be required for a drug possession charge but a sex offense may have a $75,000 bail amount.
Oregon is one of four states – along with Kentucky, Wisconsin, and Illinois – that has outlawed the practice of commercial bail bonding. This means that a bounty hunter does not get involved when a defendant skips bail. Instead, the state’s justice department acts as the bail bond agency.
