Important Jail Policies and Procedures:
Inmates at the St. Tammany Parish Jail are allowed visitation with family and friends. Visitors must arrive and sign in 20 minutes prior to visit. Failure to do so will result in the visit being denied. Visits are restricted to two visitors. Visitors will visit in equal increments. Visitation is allotted for 45 minutes. For example, 1 visitor – 45 minutes and 2 visitors – average 22 minutes each.
All visitors 15 years or older must have picture identification in order to visit an inmate. Visitors 17 years of age or younger will be permitted to visit with an inmate if supervised by an accompanying adult.
All visitors must check-out with the visitation officer when leaving the visitation area.
Visitors who leave the visitation area during their visit will not be allowed to re-enter the area and their visit will be considered forfeited.

Working at St. Tammany Parish Jail or Sheriff’s Office:
An entry level Corrections Officer in St. Tammany can earn a yearly salary of $32,100. Once he or she is post-certified and has completed a year of employment, the officer may be eligible for the state supplemental pay of $6000 per year.
Correction Officers are responsible for receiving and discharging inmates, supervising inmate activities, implementing the jail’s rules, and inspecting cells.

Bail and Bondsman
A person arrested in St. Mary Parish can remain free from jail while awaiting trial if he or she is able to post bail. Bail is when the court requires money to be deposited into their care while the trial is ongoing. This is to help ensure that the defendant shows up at his trial. If he/she misses a court appearance, the money is forfeited.
A defendant who is unable to post bail due to financial constraints is allowed to hire a bondsman to post bail on his behalf. The bondsman will also be held liable by the court for payment of the entire bail amount if the defendant fails to fulfill his court obligations. To hire a bondsman, the defendant must pay him 12% of the bail. This fee is non-refundable.
