Wood County Information
As of the 2010 census, the population was 41,964 and Wood’s county seat is Quitman. The county was named for George T. Wood, who was the governor of Texas from 1847 to 1849. The county is 696 square miles in total area and the largest city is Mineola.

Established in 1850 the area was once occupied by early Europeans, and early industries included sawmills. Later coal was discovered in the county, railroads came to the area and oil was discovered in 1941.

The current building was constructed and completed in 1988. At that time, the capacity of the facility was 71 beds with an additional 7 separation cells. In 2001, the existing building was expanded to what we currently have, which is the capacity of 112 beds with 16 separation cells for males, and 25 beds with 4 separation cells being for female inmates.

Visitation can be scheduled on Tuesdays and Sundays.
Males can be visited from 1:00pm to 2:00pm
Females can be visited from 3:00pm to 4:00pm
Males Trustees can be visited from 5:00pm to 5:30pm on Tuesdays only.

Visits will be 20 minutes in length and have intervals between each visit that will be 5 minutes long and inmates will be allowed 2 on-site visits per week not to exceed 1 visit/day.

At-home visits will cost $20 for Family and Friends $10 for attorneys, must be scheduled 24 hours in advance and require the approval of Wood County Detention Center staff. More information regarding at home visits can be found at:

Wood County Probation Department
Probation officer’s are appointed to investigate, report on, and supervise the conduct of convicted offenders on probation.
