Walker county was established in 1846 and as of the 2010 census, its population was 67,861. The largest city is also the county seat, Huntsville. The county was once named for a Mississippi legislator, Robert J. Walker, who support the Union during the Civil War, which earned him a number of area enemies. To save the county name, it is now reported to be named in memory of a former Texas Ranger and soldier, Samuel H. Walker. The county has a total area of 802 square miles. Part of the Sam Houston National Forest is located in the county.
