The county was established in 1846 and as of the 2010 census, the population was 45,413. The county seat and largest city is Livingston. The Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation of the federally recognized tribe is in Polk county and the natives have lived there since the early 19th century. They migrated from the southeast and as of the 2000 census, had a population of 480 inside the reservation. The tribe however, reports enrolled members totaling 1,100.
The county was named for His Excellency James Knox Polk for POTUS from Tennessee. The total area of the county is 1,110 square miles.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has developed several informative programs for public gatherings and organizations. These programs consist of:
A neighborhood watch program “Polk County Wise Eyes,” which is a program that brings the old Neighborhood Watch program into the electronic age by utilizing the web email to distribute information on crime.
