Bail and Bondsman

A person charged with a crime may be temporarily released from jail while awaiting trial if he posts bail. This is the money set by the court to be used as insurance, helping to guarantee that the defendant will appear at all of his scheduled court appearances. Failure to appear will result in the defendant being labeled a fugitive and his bail forfeited.

A bondsman can be hired if a defendant (or his family) cannot afford to post bail. A bondsman can act as a surety, posting bail on behalf of the defendant in order to secure his release. The cost of this service is usually 10% of the bail amount. Once paid, this fee cannot be refunded.
