Bail and Bondsman
The money required by the court for a pretrial inmate to stay out of jail is called bail. Bail is used to help guarantee the defendant’s compliance with his court obligations after he is released from custody. If he violates any of the conditions of his release, he loses the money.
A bondsman charges 12% of the bail amount to defendants who need help in securing their release from jail due to financial difficulties. Once hired, he can sign a bond with the court that allows the release of the defendant. His service also includes making himself responsible for paying the entire bail amount if the defendant fails to meet his court obligations.
