Bail and Bondsman

Lodging money with the court in order to get a pretrial inmate released temporarily from custody is called posting bail. The money will be kept by the court to help ensure the inmate’s return once the trial begins. Failure to appear means that the inmate forfeits the money.

Sometimes, a pretrial inmate cannot afford the bail amount set by the court. In cases like this, he/she is allowed to use the services of a bondsman. A bondsman can act as a surety for a fee. This fee is usually 10% of the bail amount and cannot be refunded.
