Bail and Bondsman

Bail is the money that is required by the court in exchange for granting temporary release to an inmate awaiting trial. The money will be used to guarantee the defendant’s appearance in court once the trial starts. The money is forfeited if the defendant does not show up as promised.

If the defendant is not able to post bail due to a lack of funds, he can still secure his release through the help of a bondsman. A bondsman typically charges 10% of the bail amount as his fee. Once hired, a bondsman can sign a bond with the court and be held responsible for the defendant’s appearance in court. If the defendant fails to appear, the bondsman will need to pay the entire bail amount.
